Gutters get ignored until they fail, and by then the damage they cause is usually worse than the gutter itself. A blocked, rusted or overflowing gutter doesn't just make a mess — it rots fascia boards, undermines foundations, drowns garden beds and causes the kind of slow internal water damage that doesn't show up until your wall plaster starts bubbling.
Most gutter problems come from a handful of usual suspects. Blockages from leaves, twigs and debris that stop water flowing to the downpipes. Broken or rusted brackets that let sections sag and pool water. Rust holes along the back edge of the gutter where leaves have sat wet for too long. Failed sealant at the joints between sections. And downpipes that have detached, blocked internally, or simply can't handle the volume of water coming off the roof in a storm.
When gutters fail, water doesn't disappear — it goes somewhere else, and that somewhere is almost always bad news. Overflowing water rots the fascia and eaves it cascades down. It saturates the soil right next to your foundations, which over a few seasons can cause the soil to move and your house to settle unevenly. It stains and waterlogs internal walls. And it floods garden beds and pathways near the house. Replacing a gutter is hundreds; fixing the foundations after years of bad drainage is tens of thousands.
Spot rust and isolated holes can be patched and the gutter will last another decade. Failed brackets and dropped sections can be re-secured. But when corrosion is widespread along the back edge and base of the gutter, you're past the point where repair is sensible — replacement is cheaper than chasing patches every winter.
